The outer core-- third layer of the earth comprised mainly of iron and nickel and is approximately 1500 miles thick. |
"Ok... another layer... so?"
Well, not another layer. Remember the apple? Well, the little pocket where the seeds live would be the outer core. Think about that next time you eat an apple!!
The outer core is so hot that it is all liquid.
Also the fluid inside the outer core is electrically charged and flows
around acting as a magnet.
WOW!
BUT WAIT!!
There is a final layer... and that layer is the...

"So this is the real middle?"
Yes... the inner core is the real middle of the Earth. Ok-- if we continue with the apple thing I guess the seeds would be the inner core... except they would all be smooshed together very tightly.
In fact, there is so much pressure in the inner core, it cannot flow like a liquid, but it is more like a solid.
Now THAT'S
a lot of pressure!!
OUTER CORE
|
The outer core is the layer right below the mantle.
It is so hot that it is completely liquid. It also contains a magnetic
field.
It is about 1500 miles thick. It is made up of liquid iron and nickel. |
INNER CORE
|
The inner core is the center of the Earth.
It does not flow like a liquid because of too much pressure.
It is about 1400 miles thick. It is also made up of iron and nickel. |
